Is hand washing really important?

1) Wash your hands

"80% of infectious diseases are transmitted by touch" says Dr Arasu. "Antibacterial products are thought to be no more effective in cleaning your hands than regular soap and water. The process of creating friction by rubbing your hands together and washing with water soap is your best bet to protect against these types of illness."

With the cold and flu season now upon us, it is more important than ever to try and protect your health. Professor John Oxford, one of the UK’s leading virologists and flu experts says that hand washing is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of infections.

How to wash your hands properly
  • Wet your hands with clean running water (warm or cold) and apply soap.
  • Rub your hands together to make a lather and scrub them well; be sure to scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  • Continue rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice.
  • Rinse your hands well under running water.
  • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry.
