What is Ovarian Cancer?

Ovarian cancer starts in the cells of the ovary (the female reproductive organ that produces eggs). According to Ovarian Cancer Canada, there is a lifetime risk of 1 in 70 that you will develop ovarian cancer.

Over 2,600 Canadian women are diagnosed every year.

The different types of ovarian cancer?

There are several types of ovarian cancer:
  • Epithelial ovarian cancer, which starts in the surface layers of the ovary. This accounts for 80-90 percent of all ovarian tumours.
  • Germ cell ovarian cancer, which develops in the cells that produce eggs.
  • Stromal ovarian cancer, which begins in the cells that hold the ovaries together.
