Dealing with cancer and emotions: Depression
Periods of depression when dealing with cancer are inevitable, especially if you are feeling tired, sick or anxious, or if you are feeling the strain of caring for someone. Although you may have low points, it’s important that a depressed frame of mind doesn’t take hold.
How to deal with it
As Macmillan Cancer Support advises, "No one is going to think any worse of you if you do feel depressed, but if you feel you can’t lift yourself out of your depression then it could be helpful to talk to a counsellor."
A helpful tip
Finding a cancer support group in your area can also be a way to connect with other people who are going through the same emotional turmoil. "Many people find talking to others in similar situations helps a lot," says Jean Slocombe of Cancer Research UK.
