Checking your breasts

Regardless of age breast cancer should be something women check themselves regularly for.

Clinical Nurse, Tara Beaumont, of Breast Cancer Awareness says 'there is no right or wrong way, but it's important to feel around the whole breast, over the nipple and into the armpit'.

Usually any changes in the breast are down to hormones so there is no need to panic straight away. Arming yourself with knowledge will make you feel more in control, so if you notice any of the following symtoms a visit to the GP is advisable:
  • Changes to the size or shape of the breast
  • Puckering or rashes
  • Discharge from the one or both nipples
  • Swelling in the armpit or around the collar bone
  • Constant pain in the breast or armpit
  • A lump or thickening in the breast which feels different from the rest of the breast tissue
  • Nipple becoming inverted or changing shape
