“With diamonds, you will get what you pay for,” says Straughton. “In other words, it is very important to look at the clarity of the diamond.”

Clarity. One of the “Four C’s” that will quickly make their way into your vocabulary as soon as you start boning up on diamonds. The other three are colour, cut and carat.

Of these, people tend to be most familiar with the term carat, though many often misinterpret its meaning. Unlike with gold, where carat is a measure of the purity of the metal, with diamonds, carat simply refers to the gem’s weight.

The others are relatively self-explanatory. Clarity refers to the number and size of the tiny imperfections that occur naturally in most diamonds; colour refers to the whiteness of the stone (or lack of colour); and cut refers to its shape.
