Contraceptive choices

Contraceptive choices

The pill is the number 1 method of contraception in the UK and is used by 54% of you. Practical, easy to use and over 99% effective (the mini-pill is 98--99% effective), it's by far your preferred method of contraception!

The second most popular method is the condom, chosen by 21% of Brits. In addition to providing protection from pregnancy, condoms have the advantage of protecting against sexually transmitted infections. They're ideal for irregular sexual activity and if you're having sex with different partners.

In third place* is the withdrawal method. This method is not advised because it's quite unreliable: he may not withdraw his penis in time, and it's possible for sperm to be present in the pre-ejaculattion fluid that's produced.

The third most popular method for women between 16 and 29 years of age is the injection or implant. These methods are becoming increasingly popular and they're very practical: you don't have to remember to take your pill or to buy condoms.

*for non-surgical methods. Including surgical procedures, the third most common method is sterilization.
