Keep it short and sweet

Don't send an eight-page essay, you don't want to send your guy to sleep! Instead, keep it short and snappy. Think Twitter, not Proust.

"There's no need for long, rambling messages," says James. "Save the long conversations for when you're together."

Kate's also a fan of the short message: "Texts should be tantalizingly brief. Be mysterious. If he wants more, he can call you."

Remember to keep those texts upbeat and positive too. If you had a train-wreck of a day, personalize the experience and make it into something interesting.

"Tell them about how exciting your life is, rather than how bored, tired and fed up you are. That way they'll want to be a part of it too," says James.
