5 Uncommon Winter Escapes

by Marie-Sarah Published on December 9, 2015

If you see winter as a never-ending nightmare and can’t wait to head south when temps are at their coldest, you may wonder where else you could head this year other than the Caribbean. For those who could use a little more adventure than what an all-inclusive package has to offer, these tempting destinations may fit the bill–and your budget given all the great deals this time of year!

Ecuador has so much to offer and has the advantage of being smaller than other South American countries, which means you can see quite a bit of it in a fairly short amount of time. For example, you could spend a week in Quito to take in its volcanoes and then spend another week in Montañita to surf in paradise. Those who have more time and money to spare can even go to the Galapagos Islands to cap off their dream vacation!

Believe it or not, Asia is a lot more affordable than you might think. It’s hard to beat return airfare from Montreal to Bangkok for under $1,000. This vast city has a lot to offer travellers, like delicious food at bargain basement prices. If you’re up for an outdoor adventure, Erawan National Park is the perfect place to go camping in a wilderness setting that looks nothing like our own.

Ok, so maybe Japan isn’t a tropical paradise this time of year but their winters are a lot milder than ours and if you happen to love outdoor adventures, skiing and powder snow enthusiasts swear by the trails in Hokkaido, located in Northern Japan. After a few days of hitting some awesome slopes, you could always change gears and visit Tokyo for a more urban adventure.

Located in southern Africa, this magnificent country is a feast for the eyes. A safari in the Okavengo Delta will not disappoint if you want to get up close and personal with elephants, bison, lions, hippos, giraffes, zebras and antelopes. Oh my!

If driving along the West Coast sounds good to you, why not rent a car and go down Highway 1 from San Francisco to San Diego? Be sure to visit Monterey Bay, Carmel, Big Sur, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and, of course, Los Angeles. The beach towns in Orange County like Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach are also worth seeing if you have time.
