One of the most enjoyable aspects of colder weather is “cocooning” and all the simple pleasures that go along with it: wool socks, a roaring fireplace, snuggling under the covers watching Netflix and, yes, those lovely hot cocktails! Here are three hot drink recipes that are sure to warm your bones, whatever the occasion!

Hot Wine (if you’re having friends over)

o 4 cups apple cider
o ¼ cup honey
o Juice and zest from 1 orange
o 4 cloves
o 2 cinnamon sticks
o 3 star anises
o 1 bottle of fairly dry red wine (like a Cabernet Sauvignon)

In a large casserole, mix the cider, wine, honey, cinnamon sticks, orange juice and zest, cloves and star anises. Bring to a boil, simmer for 10 minutes and serve.

Hot Toddy (if you’re alone or if you have the flu)

o 2 oz. whiskey
o 1 tbsp honey
o 4 oz. hot water
o 1 tsp lemon juice
o 1 lemon wedge

Pour the whiskey into a ceramic mug. Add the honey, hot water, and lemon juice. Mix well. Microwave for 1 minute, garnish with the lemon wedge and serve.

Hot Buttered Rum Cocktails (to share with your sweetie)

o 2/3 cup brown sugar
o ½ cup unsalted butter (at room temperature)
o ¼ cup honey
o ½ tsp ground cinnamon
o ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
o 1/8 tsp ground cloves
o Pinch of salt
o ¾ cup spiced rum
o 2 cups boiling water
o 2 cinnamon sticks (garnish)

Use an electric mixer to combine the brown sugar, butter, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt. Add the rum and boiling water. Mix until fully dissolved. Serve in mugs garnished with a cinnamon stick.
