The first thing to think about when planning your party is to decide what's important to you.

What kind of party do you want to have? Is it a dinner, a happy hour, a frosted cupcake sugarfest?

If food is not the focus, go for hors d'oeuvres or a potluck. If shiny snowglobes and bright Santas make you cringe, cut back on decor.

Make sure to define exactly what your budget is: is it $50 or $500? Make a list of people you want to invite and make them confirm, to limit wasteful spending.

"You can cut everywhere, there are always, ways to save. It's just up to you where you want to save." says Silcoff.

A helpful tip? Forgo champagne and expensive bubbly. "You can have a fruit punch instead of champagne," Silcoff suggests. Just don't forget to add the rum!
