Points mean prizes

There are other rewards schemes available such as Nectar and Freedom.

Nectar points can be collected in Sainsbury's, BP, Amazon, eBay and a host of other retail outlets and internet stores - they can also be claimed on some household utilities.

Whilst you don't need a credit card to collect Nectar points, you'll earn more if you have one that incorporates the scheme.

In fact Sainsbury's have just launched two new credit cards which maximize points - for the first two years you get two points for every one pound you spend.

Nectar points, worth around 1p each, can be redeemed in Sainsbury's stores but the rewards are often greater when you purchase things like theme park tickets with them instead.

Barclay's too have launched their own scheme. The Barclaycard Freedom scheme works like a store loyalty card such as the Boots card. When you pay for your goods or services at well-known participants such as Pizza Express, Yo! Sushi, Npower, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Shell and Balls Brothers, you can choose to use a percentage or all of your points as payment against you purchases. Points are awarded at 1% per £1 spent t any of the 30,000 participating vendors (Shell customers will earn 0.5% instead).

This scheme is by far the simplest offering with no complicated reward claiming process to contend with. Around 8million Barclaycard customers have been automatically included in this scheme already.

MBNA offer a range of credit cards which offer money off all kinds of goods and services: Football Clubs, Play.com, BT and Sony to name a few. They also have a range of charitable cards which allow you to give more to a good cause.
