Escape: Hot Springs in Hakone

Escape: Hot Springs in Hakone

No trip to Japan is complete without a trip to nearby hot springs. Though you can find a vast array of onsen (hot springs) and sento (local bathhouses) in Tokyo, it’s worth a trip out of the city for a visit to Hakone. The town, located just an hour and a half away from Tokyo’s bustling Shinjuku station, is one of Japan’s most famous resort towns, revered for its fresh mountain air and healing hot springs.

For a real treat, stay overnight at the historic Fujiya Hotel. The classic inn has seen its share of famous guests over the years—Charlie Chaplin, Helen Keller, John Lennon, Prince Albert (later George VI) of the UK, and various emperors and empresses have all stayed here—and remains a welcoming and upscale escape from Tokyo. In addition to its three restaurants—French, Japanese and Western—the hotel has a tea lounge and historic bar.
Perhaps most importantly, the hotel has its own hot spring facilities, including a classic hot spring (with the spring source constantly flowing in), a private Mermaid bath, hinoki wood bath, pool and Jacuzzi.
