Balancing the personal and the professional

Ms. Reding, you are a very powerful woman these days, yet also very feminine. Does that represent an obstacle for you?
I think that we are very lucky to be women, because we know how to do everything just like men do. And in addition, we have our femininity. Isn't that great? As long as society allows women to be proper women, that is. Because real women get involved and take on responsibility. They have proved this repeatedly throughout history.

You have brought up three children and built a career – how does a woman do that?
I had all my sons while I was in Parliament. It was not always easy. I wanted to be a good mother, that was important to me. And yet not neglect anything. I breastfed my sons, all three of them. You have to be disciplined, there is no question about it. But it is possible.

And have your three sons developed into proper feminists?
I simply taught them from an early age to be independent and self-reliant. And there came a point in time when I just stopped ironing their shirts and showed them where the iron was. Today, there is no everyday task that they can't do: they know how to cook, clean, iron, but also how to have fun, serve wine and pay women compliments.
