MDG 7: Environmental Sustainability

The Goal: Environmental sustainability

Targets to be met by 2015:

  • Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programs and reverse the loss of environmental resources.
  • Reduce biodiversity loss, achieving, by 2010, a significant reduction.
  • Halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.

    What has been achieved?
Although the drinking water targets look achievable half the population in developing regions still lack basic sanitation. Slowing down the decline in biodiversity by 2010 has also been missed. The lives of 100 million slum dwellers should have been improved already but their numbers are actually rising.
