The Goals: Improve maternal health

Targets to be met by 2015:

  • Reduce the maternal mortality ratio by 75%
  • Achieve universal access to reproductive health.
What has been achieved?
Although access to pre and postnatal care has improved everywhere, maternal mortality rates are still dramatically high and is unlikely to be reduced by 2015. More than half a million women still die in pregnancy and childbirth every year. Those most at risk are young girls but unfortunately they lack sufficent access to family planning in all regions.
