Grace Akallo, the survivor

Grace Akallo has come a long way. A defender of children through the United Africans for Women & Children Rights organization that she founded, this former child soldier from Uganda appeals to the international community to come to the aid of all children who are at the hands of armed groups.

Enlisted by force in 1996 by LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) rebels, she was abducted and raped before she was able to escape the claws of the rebels.

In the documentary directed by Quebecer Raymonde Provencher, ‘’Grace, Milly, Lucy: Child Soldiers’’, Grace tells the story of how she was able to get away, essentially because she managed to escape after seven months in captivity, whilst other young girls have been used as child soldiers and child mothers for years. Yes, child mothers given as wives to the rebels.

It’s a documentary that shows the terrible state of the world and it uncovers some shocking figures: there are 250,000 child soldiers in the world, 120,000 of whom are girls, some aren’t even 15 years of age and they make up more than 50% of the population.

Let’s hope that Grace Akallo’s voice can be heard loud and clear for the sake of the world's child soldiers.
