Mali Ansary, the activist

Mali Ansary, the activist

Born in Iran, Mali Ansary quickly immigrated to Canada in order to flee Islamic laws. Her story begins in 1971. Brought up in a very conservative environment under the strict laws of Islam and subjected to an arranged marriage, she became involved in the Iranian Students Association as soon as she arrived in Canada.

She learned languages, received an education and worked for the Ministry of Health for 35 years, all while bringing up and giving a decent education to her 4 children, and that was in spite of the differences of opinion of a Muslim husband.

Alongside her studies, Mali got involved socially and politically. In 1990, along with her colleagues, she formed the Montreal Association of Iranian Women.

Since then, Mali has never stopped commanding respect for the rights of Iranian women in the world. Her combat ranges from Palestine to domestic violence, and from new refugees who are devoid of rights to victims of the war in Iraq. And much much more. Very implicated during the Bouchard-Taylor commission, these Iranian women have managed to convince the Quebec parliament to oppose Sharia law.

“The world would be a better place if people respected the rights of women and the rights to democracy,” she insists. “There’s still a long way to go but I believe in equality between men and women.”

Now retired, Mali dedicates her time to the fight for democracy and the respect of women’s rights. Her voice is precious, she speaks for those who are sentenced to death for having expressed themselves freely.
