Transmission of the virus from mother to child can take place during pregnancy, labour or after the birth through breastfeeding. It's possible to reduce the risk of transmission in the following ways:
> Providing anti-viral drugs during pregnancy and after the birth.
> Delivering the baby by Caesarean.
> Avoiding breastfeeding, but only if the alternative source of food is acceptable, viable, accessible and safe. Otherwise, it's recommended to breastfeed the baby for the first 6 months only.
