Change career

Changing careers can be daunting, but it  can lead to a more satisfying career.

Since she turned her back on a 9-to-5 job that wasn’t fulfilling her goals, life coach Louise Presley-Turner has never been happier. Now she inspires others to do the same. We asked her what to consider when changing careers.

Louise says: "It’s time for a change when you start dreading Monday’s. This is a sure sign you’re in the wrong line of work. Remember, life is too short to spend years in a job you loath!

"I would suggest spending a good two or three months researching your options before making any big career leap.

"Doing your research allows you to network, build up your contacts and if necessary create a financial safety net to assist you during your transition."

Do you always have to go back to the ‘bottom rung’ when changing careers?
"You don’t always have to go back to the bottom of the ladder when starting out, it very much depends on what you’re doing.

"If you’re turning a well-established hobby in to a career, the transition may be very straightforward.

"Sometimes it is essential to lower our status or take a drop in salary, but you must remember, there will always be some short-term pain with any life change, but it’s so worth it when you find a career you love."

What can you do to prepare yourself for your career change?

Should I make a career change?
  • Do you hate Mondays?
  • Do you dread going into work?
  • Do you find yourself complaining about work all the time?
  • Do you feel depressed although the rest of your life is fine?
  • Are you jealous of friends with more interesting careers?
What's the next step?
  • Analyze your core values
  • Work out your likes & dislikes, skills & talents
  • Pay off your debts
  • Save an emergency fund
  • Network and make contacts in your new industry
  • Hand in your notice - give yourself and your employers time to adjust!

Louise will be holding workshops at the Vitality Show (Earls Court, 24th – 27th March) called ‘Creating a future that fits’ to help anyone interested in a career change. To book your ticket visit
