Careers Advice: From the careers advice experts

On average we spend 30% of our lives at work, so it's important to make sure your chosen career is something you enjoy doing. Advice is something we can all use to improve things at work, so we've spoken to expert careers advisers and those in the know.

Essential careers advice
Before you start looking for the perfect job, you need to know what it is you're looking for.

David Clubb, managing director of Office Angels  says: "Before you start pursuing particular jobs, you need to define what makes the right kind of role for you. This means looking at your broader lifestyle as well as the type of work you can do."

One of David's essential pieces of careers advice is to think about what makes you tick.

Ask yourself:
  1. What influences you the most in your life?
  2. Are you motivated my money?
  3. Do you value finding the right work and life balance?
  4. What industries and roles are you drawn to?

Ros Taylor
is a leading UK psychologist and executive coach.

If you haven't got a firm idea of what you'd be good at, Ros says psychometric tests can really help you to choose a new career path: "It is amazing how such assessments really can deduce your strengths."

Why not also go through your CV highlighting the responsibilities and roles you most enjoyed. The things you like most in a job are likely to be the things your best at.

Play to your strengths and think about how you can use your assets in your next role. (No, not those assets).
