Equal prize money for 2007

Equal prize money for 2007

2007 is a real landmark in the history of women at Wimbledon: for the first time, men and women will receive equal prize money (to the tune of £700,000 for the ladies' and gentlemen's singles).

After a lengthy campaign by the WTA (Women's Tennis Association) Tour, the All England Club will follow the example of the other 3 Grand Slam events and award equal prize money in recognition of the values, popularity and equality of women's tennis. The French Open now offers equal prize money for the singles champions but this is not reflected in the rest of the tournament, while the US and Australian Opens offer equal prize money throughout. Wimbledon was the sole Grand Slam which persisted in retaining the disparity in men's and women's prize money, so achieving equal pay is no small landmark for the women's game.
