The principles of warrior yoga

Trudie Styler
We usually associate yoga with zen and relaxation. Why did you choose the name "warrior yoga"? Does it mark a change in the philosophy of yoga?

Trudie Styler: James D’Silva and I chose the term ‘warrior yoga’ for our yoga DVD because we developed a routine based around the warrior poses in yoga.

I connect strongly with the ideal of the ‘warrior woman’ - strong, grounded and connected with the earth, but also looking outward, focused on the horizon.

It’s not ‘warrior’ in an aggressive sense, but strong, assertive, ready for life’s challenges.

For me, the poses celebrate the physical and emotional strength of women. In my work with the Rainforest Fund and Unicef over the years, I’ve met many women living in situations of terrible hardship and poverty.

They’re surviving and keeping home and family together, strong and heroic and at the same time still feminine, caring about their health and beauty.

The idea of ‘warrior woman’ is a genuine and central aspect of feminine nature, and one worth celebrating.
