The Sleep Cycle App

Your alarm goes off when you’re smack in the middle of a REM cycle, chances are you’re not only going to have a hard time waking up, you’re actually going to walk around exhausted all day.

Wake up on your own, or when you’re in light sleep, though, and you’re much more likely to feel rested and awake.

Rather than leaving that to the luck of the draw – or luck of the BEEP, as it may be – check out the Sleep Cycle app. Just place your iPhone on the bed near you and set the alarm for a 30-minute window around when you need to get up.

The app then records your sleep patterns – so you can see later, too, how well you’re sleeping at different points throughout the night – and the alarm goes off sometime in that 30 minute window you set, when you are in the lightest sleep stage.

The alarm itself is designed to draw you slowly, gently out of sleep, by starting off soft and slowly growing louder.

It’s not as if this idea or technology is anything new or exclusive to the Sleep Cycle app. There are several alarm clocks on the market that do the same thing – with a wrist band or a watch-like device, they monitor your sleep patterns and wake you up at the most opportune moment.

What is new, though, is the price. Rather than spending upwards of 50 or 100 quid, you can get the Sleep Cycle app for just 59p.

So the question becomes, for iPhone users anyway, why not give it a try?

Now all we need is an app that will help us fall asleep in the first place.

Or maybe it’s already there, just hiding in plain sight.
