Sledging is a fun activity that can be enjoyed by all the family, and it's a real favourite with the kids. Nevertheless, there are some rules to follow to ensure safety.

There's usually one or two places to sit on a sledge. An "ordinary" sledge is often made of plastic, with two handbrake levers on the sides.

More traditional sledges are wood set on to metal rails but you can also get simple "bum boards" to sit on and slide, which have a grip the goes between the legs.

Muscles used:
Sat on top of the sledge, it requires no physical effort while going downhill... but it requires use of all the body's muscles carrying it up to the top of the hill!

Precautions to take:
There are more sledging accidents than you might think!

If you're a parent, be vigilant and keep a constant eye on your child while they're sledging, don't allow them to sledge near a road or a ravine.

Also, make sure that they're wearing a helmet, it will protect them from falls which can potentially be very dangerous.
