We know what you're thinking: "But I already buy these things for myself!"

"The problem is that some people already give themselves everything they want," Dr. Toledano explains. 

In that case, you might need to bring out the big guns. Dr. Toledano is more into positive reinforcement and rewarding. But, she says, when that doesn't work, you sometimes need some tough love. Another way to keep your resolution is to withhold something you like when you don't achieve your weekly goal.

"That's not something I like, but it could be another option, a last resort type of thing," she explains. 

The three previous tips are psychological strategies that can help you keep your resolutions once you've made them. But according to Dr. Toledano,  the most important thing is to be in a day-by-day mindset. 

"Every day you have to work on your motivation," she says. "One day at a time."

If you take each day as it comes, you'll build momentum. After the three month mark, it'll be so much a part of your life that you won't even realize you're working at it anymore.
