Creating volume

Although you should be avoiding 'Dynasty' references, volume isn't a complete no-go area. The powerful woman has become somewhat of an icon in 2009. Consider Mobama’s (Michelle Obama) entry in to fashion’s hall of fame. Not only is Michelle married to arguably the most powerful man in the world, she is intelligent, articulate and rather powerful herself. Never one for a flat do, Mobama has recently taken to pinning up her volumised shoulder-length hair for a more formal take on her usual hairstyle.

A great tip for creating volume is wearing your hair a day old and use a good root texturizing spray (Redken has a great selection). Volume plays an important role in introducing a regal mood to the power trend - when hair stylist Orlando Pita referred to his volumised up-do for Oscar de la Renta’s collection as “inspired by The Duchess” nothing could be more fitting. The style harked to Princess Anne’s famed look: a defined, rounded, up-do, Michelle would certainly approve.
