Single parent dating: Get it right

My child throws a tantrum before I go on a date, what should I do?

If your child has an extreme reaction to your new dating life, try to look at things from their perspective. It pays to dig a little deeper; don’t assume that they’re angry about you actually going on a date.

For example, is your date on an evening when you would normally settle down and watch a certain TV program together? If so, maybe they’re just acting up because you’ll miss the TV show, not because you’re seeing someone new.

Explain that you understand why they’re annoyed, but that going out will make you happy. Remember that ultimately you’re the adult, and you make the rules.
