Jean Harlow

"No one ever expects a great lay to pay all the bills."

Of all the Old Hollywood actresses, Jean Harlow has the most impressive record: she remains an iconic face of film, despite only having been active for 11 years before her death of renal failure at age 26 in 1937.

Harlean Harlow Carpenter was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1911. At 16, Jean eloped with Charles McGrew, heir to a considerable fortune. In 1928, he came into his inheritance and the pair moved to Los Angeles where Harlow began to play the socialite.

Harlow was noticed by studio executives when she drove her friend to an audition soon after arriving in California. Her first movie appearance was as an extra earning seven dollars a day in Honour Bound

In 1929, Howard Hughes signed her on for a five year contract, and cast her as the lead actress in Hell's Bells. In 1931, she starred in Platinum Blond, a name that would stick for the rest of her life.

A sex-symbol and a comic, she starred in over 34 movies in her short, but memorable career.

Plus, no one would ever make platinum hair look as good.
