Lana Turner

"A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man."

Julia Jean Turner was born in Wallace, Idaho, in 1921. Her family moved to California in the late 20s, settling first in San Francisco. In 1930, Turner's father was found dead on the way home from a craps game. Lana and her mother moved to Los Angeles soon after.

Turner's rise to fame is show-business legend. At 16, a high school student, she walked into a drugstore to order a Coke. As she stood at the counter, she was noticed by William R. Wilkerson, publisher of the Hollywood Reporter. He introduced her to talent agent Zeppo Marx, who signed her on.

In 1937, she played in her first movie, They Won't Forget, which earned her the nickname "The Sweater Girl," after a curve-hugging sweater she wore during the film. She signed a contract with Metro Goldwyn Mayer and graduated high school while acting.

Lana Turner was anything but shy. She was known for changing partners as often as her sweaters. She was married eight times to seven different men.

"My goal was to have one husband and seven children," she famously joked. "But it turned out to be the other way around1"
