"I don't want to be a silly temptress. I cannot see any sense in getting dressed up and doing nothing but tempting men in pictures."

Greta Lovisa Gustaffson (a.k.a. Greta Garbo) was born in Sweden in 1905, and was a celebrated actress of the silent and classic film era.

The Swedish actress became an international star after Louis B. Mayer asked that she be brought to Hollywood in 1925. Her first major Hollywood success was alongside John Gilbert in Flesh and the Devil in 1926.

Her first "talkie" was in 1930, when she starred in Anna Christie. The movie was publicized with the slogan "Garbo talks!"

Garbo starred in 24 films, and was nominated for four Academy Awards, finally winning an honorary Oscar in 1954 for her "luminous and unforgettable screen performances."

She never married, and never had children. Her two most important relationships were with frequent co-star John Gilbert, and Russian-born millionaire George Schlee.

Since Garbo's death in 1990, biographers have speculated that she may have been bisexual, and is even rumoured to have had an affair with fellow silent star Louise Brooks.
