First date advice: Body language dos and don’ts

4. DO open up your hands

In stressful situations we tend to clench our fists and tighten the muscles in our arms. This is due to the body’s ‘fight or flight’ response to stress - a primeval instinct which prepares the body to either fight or run away in stressful situations.

This also makes for quite off-putting body language on a first date. Make a mental note to relax your hands when you can.

Drop them into your lap or, when you’re holding something such as a wine glass, make sure you’re not gripping on for dear life. Your relaxed pose will create a feeling of ease between yourself and your date.
