Think of all of those couples sat in silent Italian restaurants paying triple the price of a normal meal, or that limp bunch of flowers bought last minute from a petrol station.

"You're lucky to be single on Valentine's Day," says Doug. "You have the day to yourself to do whatever you want and there are loads of attractive, single people out there to meet. It's a day of opportunity."
