The future of fashion: Iris Van Herpen

The future of fashion: Iris Van Herpen

Iris Van Herpen has a fearless vision of future fashion. Known for her futuristic shapes and designs that use leather, metal and 3D printing, her unconvential approach to fashion has taken the world by surprise. Having interned with fashion greats such as Alexander McQueen and Dutch felt artist Claudy Jongstra, Iris thinks outside the box when it comes to design.

At the Dutch Fashion Awards 2010  she sent models down the runway in interlaced leather bodices, ram skull style head dresses and chunky Gagalicious booties, hand made in collaboration with United Nude. (Can any one spot the Alexander McQueen influence?)

Models were lit softly from above, giving dramatic light and shade to her designs, transforming them into underwater creatures to give maximum impact to her collection.

Her architectural hand crafted designs used sculptural geometric shapes to create strange other worldly silhouettes with an extra terrestrial quality.

It's fashion but not as we know it.

Scooping the Mercedez Benz Fashion Award, the International Fashion Incubator Award and the Dutch Fashion Incubator Award, the future holds great things for Iris Van Herpen - we for one will be following her debut Paris show during Couture Week in January 2011.

And having achieved all of this at the age of 26 we are sure there is much more to come from the Dutch designer - she's made us excited about the future of fashion again. Watch this space.
