Paul Costelloe was the first to christen the new British Fashion Council catwalk.

As the lights fell, the sweet tones of Vera Lynn rang out across the venue and cream linen tailoring fit for a sunny seaside outing meandered along the catwalk.

But before you found yourself too caught up in the idea of the White Cliffs of Dover, Vera found herself replaced by the electro stylings of Calvin Harris and the British nostalgia was pulled into the 21st century.

Sculpted shoulders, padded skirts and touches of metallic appeared alongside trapeze coats with pleated details.
Creams and browns were interjected with girlish pinks and juicy oranges and, for the first time, the designer also showed menswear with preppy, Brideshead Revisited-style jumpers tied nonchalantly over shoulders.

Just a hop, skip and a jump away from the main Somerset House venue lies the On|Off building where jostling crowds gathered to celebrate Estethica’s seventh season at London Fashion Week.

Harold Tillman, Chairman of the British Fashion Council, made a speech among the 28 designer stands that make up the Estethica section of the exhibition.
He spoke passionately about London’s promotion of ethical fashion and pledged that there would be a renewed commitment to sustainable fashion practices – an announcement met with applause from those not clutching champagne or too busy engrossed in the ethical fares around them.
