9 nutritious brown bag breakfasts

by Marie-Sarah Published on December 8, 2015

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day but if you like to sleep in for as long as possible before going to work, you probably end up skipping it. The good news is that with just a little preparation, you can brown bag a healthy breakfast like the ones below and eat it at work. So go ahead, press that snooze button!

Almond Butter and Cherry Jam Sandwich
This sandwich is a healthier alternative to the traditional peanut butter and jelly because almond butter contains heart-healthier fats than peanut butter. Spread it on multigrain bread with cherry jam and you’ve got yourself a nutritious and delicious breakfast!

Defrosted Homemade Breakfast Burrito
Breakfast burritos are a practical breakfast option because they can be prepared in advance, frozen and then micro-waved for 1-2 minutes once you get to the office. Ingredients for 1 burrito: 1 whole wheat tortilla, 2 scrambled eggs, 1/4 cup black beans, 2 tbsp salsa, and 2 tbsp of grated cheese. Yummy!

Turkish Breakfast
I got this delicious Mediterranean breakfast idea from Sparrow, a Montreal restaurant on St-Laurent Boulevard where I love to brunch. It’s also a great way to get rid of leftovers. The ingredients: Feta cheese, olives, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, an egg, bread and fig jam. Just pack it up, put it on a plate at work, and watch your co-workers drool!

Greek Yogurt with Caramel Sauce and Bananas
If you have a sweet tooth, this one is for you! Just put 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt, 3 tbsp of caramel sauce (or dulce de leche) and 1 sliced banana into a Masson jar and you’re good to go!

Granola Overnight Oats
You’ve probably seen Overnight Oats recipes all over Pinterest. Overnight oats are basically rolled oats soaked overnight to absorb the liquid you put them in. Our version: 1/2 cup milk, 1/3 cup granola, 1/2 crushed banana, 1/4 cup chopped nuts and a pinch of ground cinnamon. You can also heat this breakfast in the microwave if you like!

Blueberry Smoothie
This one is so easy: just put 1 cup of cranberry juice, 3/4 cup blueberry yogurt, ¾ cup fresh or frozen blueberries and 2 tbsp chia seeds into a blender, and drink up!

Cranberry and Lemon Muffins
These delicious muffins remind me of the Holidays and make a wonderful treat on a Friday morning with a hot cup of coffee. Check out the recipe here.

Banana & Avocado Breakfast Bowl
This recipe is as simple as it is delicious. It will look and taste even better if you garnish the bowl with pomegranates as shown on the photo.

Bagels with Cream Cheese and Strawberries
These are sinfully delicious! If you’re ever in Montreal’s Mile-End district, be sure to get your bagels at St-Viateur (they’re even better than Fairmount Bagels in my opinion). Spread on some cream cheese, top with strawberries, and presto!

Bon appétit!
