Delia Smith: how to roast a turkey


Delia’s most important tip is to know how much your turkey weighs once you’ve removed the giblets and defrosted it!

Make sure your turkey is thoroughly defrosted before you start cooking.

Then you can use our guide below, to work out your cooking times...

Our suggested turkey cooking times:


Weight HIGH TEMP (220°C, gas mark 7, 425°F), LOWER TEMP (170°C, gas mark 3, 325°F),  HIGH TEMP (200°C , gas mark 6, 400°F)
8-10lbs / 3.5-4.5 kg
 
30mins 2 ½ - 3 hours 30mins - uncovered
11-12lbs / 4.5-5.5 kg 40mins 3 - 3½ hours  30mins - uncovered
13-14lbs / 5.5-6.5 kg 40mins 3½  - 4 hours 40mins - uncovered
15-20lb /6.75-9 kg
 
45 minutes 4 - 5 hours 30mins - uncovered
