First bath

Giving your newborn her first bath can be fraught with worry: will she cry and hate it? Will you drop her?

Tackle it

•    ‘Many new parents worry the water will be too hot or that they might drop their baby’, says Liz. ‘If your baby does slip under water briefly, pick her up and keep your voice
relaxed – don’t show panic. Remember she’s been in fluid for nine months prior to birth!’

•    Prepare everything you’ll need in advance: towels, clothes, a nappy.

•    While the water mustn’t be too hot, make sure it’s warm enough – most babies don’t like a bath that’s too cold. ‘To start with, a bath thermometer can be useful,’ says Liz.
