The name game: Choosing a last name for your baby

A modern parenting dilemma

A modern parenting dilemma

It’s becoming a battle for an increasing number of parents, or at least a point of discussion: Which last name to give the kids?

It’s no longer a default answer. More and more couples, both married and un-married, are choosing to hyphenate. Others find the hyphen unwieldy and are alternating names between kids, or ditching the paternal name completely and opting to pass on the mother’s maiden name.

The issue is a tough nut to crack, especially as couples and families move away from the nuclear model of yester-century. An increasing number of unmarried couples are having kids, and more and more same-sex couples, both married and unmarried, are having children. All of these factors raise a slew of name game questions: Which one to pick? What’s most fair? What’s best for the child?
