School outerwear

If your school doesn't have a regulation blazer or raincoat, it is really worth investing in an all-weather jacket. There are some great 3-in-1 styles for both girls and boys which allow you to remove a fleece lining on warmer days.

It is important to bear in mind that it gets dark early in winter so if the the coat or jacket you buy doesn't have reflective strips, you can purchase these separately or alternatively give the child reflective armbands.

Raincoats (John Lewis has standard black and green ones from £12) are a good idea, especially if school has a blazer but no waterproof outerwear: the rain jacket can be folded and is lightweight enough to be easily carried in the school bag.
