Piers Morgan targeted by One Direction fans after Twitter spat

Piers Morgan should know better than to start a war with One Direction.Because if you fight with 1D, you have to take on their fans, too.

 - Piers Morgan vs. 1D: Twitter war
Journalist and chat show host Piers is feeling the wrath of One Direction fans after he had a playful argument with the band on Twitter.

It all started when Piers made a cutting comment about 37-year-old footballer David Beckham's decision to leave LA Galaxy.

Piers, 47, tweeted: "No serious top flight team would sign Beckham for football reasons any more - he should retire gracefully."

One Direction boy Harry Styles - who's a keen footballer - caught sight of Piers' cutting remark and felt the urge to respond and stick up for Becks.

He wrote: "@piersmorgan David Beckham is my hero. Winston is second in line."

Piers then quipped: "Is that because he always runs in one direction?"

Harry's band mate Louis Tomlinson, 20, soon got involved: "I LOVE David Beckham!", prompting Piers to reply: "Well sign him up for the group - bet he sings better than he plays now."

Harry decided it was about time he got some support on his side - and so decided to turn to Syco boss Simon Cowell, responsible for 1D's rise to fame since "X Factor" 2010.

He wrote: "Hiiii @SimonCowell can you tell @piersmorgan to leave us alone please? He's being nasty.."

Piers posted: "Can't believe I'm currently being sledged about Beckham by TWO members of One Direction. Boy-band types clearly stick together."

He then admitted he was being abused by "roughly 25 million One Directioners".

Such is 1D's power on the social networking site, Liam Payne, 19, then managed to get "#PiersMorganIsSmelly" trending worldwide, with the father of four declaring "WAR" as a result.

Piers then posted a string of jokily abusive comments directed at the band, though he decided to leave Zayn Malik, 19, and Niall Horan, 19, out of the argument.

He wrote: "My Twitter feed is erupting like a volcano, and rather like @Harry_Styles @Real_Liam_Payne @Louis_Tomlinson - it ain't pretty."

He added: "Great to see that so many One Directioners genuinely think I'm better looking than @Harry_Styles @Real_Liam_Payne @Louis_Tomlinson - thanks!"

Piers gained 11,000 followers in one-hour as a result of the spat, before challenging the boys to settle the argument on his CNN show, "Piers Morgan Tonight," when they are in New York.
