Elijah Wood was born 28 January 1981 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He has an older brother and a younger sister. He started his acting career at the age of 12.
He signed with a modelling agency and was quickly noticed by Robert Zemekis, the director of “Back to the Future Part II”, who offered him a minor role in the film.
In 1990 he accepted a part in Barry Levinson’s film “Avalon”. However, his first major role was alongside Mel Gibson in the 1992 film “Forever Young”. Elijah has not been away from a film set since.
He has learned how to make his career work, starring alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including: Kevin Costner and Bruce Willis.
One day, on the set of “The Faculty”, he heard about an incredible opportunity. He sorted himself out with some tapes and sent them to the director, Peter Jackson.
Jackson was so impressed with the young actor he offered him the starring role of “Frodo Baggins” in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. The trilogy was a huge international success and cemented Elijah Wood in cinema History.
Following the success of “The Lord of the Rings”, Elijah Wood went on to star in the film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004), where he stars alongside Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet.
The film received international critical acclaim, but was not a huge box office hit as it was not widely distributed or advertised.
In 2005 he starred alongside Bruce Willis and Micky Rourke in the crime thriller “Sin City”, an adaptation from Frank Miller’s comics, showing already that he had a veritable acting talent allowing him to broaden the genre of film he starred in.
In the same year he starred in the film “Green Street”, a film about a Harvard undergraduate (played by Wood), who is sent down from the University and finds himself in London, where he gets involved with a gang of football hooligans. The film is based around the fans of West Ham United, a club Wood is a fan of in real life.
In 2005, Elijah Wood also set up his own record label called “Simian Records”. To date the label has signed a small number of bands including “The Apples in Stereo”.
Based on Wood’s personal music tastes, we know they will be an indie/rock band. His favourite bands are “Smashing Pumpkins”, “The Stone Roses” and “The Hives”. Impeccable taste!
In 2006 Wood continued to wow audiences with his performance in the film “Paris, je t’aime”, starring alongside Gerard Depardieu and Natalie Portman in the romantic drama of how love unfolds in one of, if not the most, romantic cities in the world.
In the same year, Wood took on an entirely different role in the animated film “Happy Feet”, where he played the voice of “Mumble”.
The success of the first film meant that a sequel was inevitable and in 2011 he lent his voice to the same character again, for “Happy Feet Two”.
In 2007, Wood starred alongside Chris Klein (“Oz” Ostreicher in the film “American Pie) in the film “Day Zero”, a film about three friends who are drafted into the army and are required to report for duty in thirty days’ time. The film depicts how they deal with what lies ahead for them during this time.
In 2009 he returned to sci-fi providing the voice for the character “9” in the self-titled film. “9” is a rag doll, who survives a war between man and machine, which has wiped out mankind. It is up to “9” to save the world.
In 2010, Wood starred in the rom-com “Romantics”, alongside Katie Holmes. Showing that he can once again lend his talent to any movie genre, the movie was praised by critics.
This year we will see Wood return to our screens as the cute and courageous “Frodo Baggins” in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” with the filming for the sequel “The Hobbit: There and Back Again” already underway and due to be released in 2013.
Aside from his acting and music career, Wood is involved in charity work. He is definitely a man with a big heart and a generous spirit and supports the charities “Keep a Child Alive” and “The Art of Elysium”, for whom he has been the DJ at several fundraising events.
Elijah Wood is definitely big personality in a little shell. He has an amazing acting talent and with his elfin looks is also very cute.
It is also rumoured that he is currently single after splitting with his girlfriend of 5 years, Pamela Racine (drummer/dancer with the band “Gogol Bordello”) in late 2010.
