was born 31 May 1976 in Castleknock, near Dublin. Both he and his older sister were interested in cinema, and particularly with Marilyn Monroe
His main interest when he was young was football. Both his uncle and father were professional footballers.
Farrell was a bit of a tearaway as a teenager. He was excluded from several schools, he smoked, drank and got into fights all the time.
When he was 18 Farrell unsuccessfully auditioned for the boy band “Boyzone”.
He then decided that he wanted to study acting and enrolled at the Gaiety School of Drama, in Dublin.
However, he did not like the discipline required at the school and dropped out.
Shortly after, he landed his first television role in the Irish hit TV series “Ballykissangel” (1996).
He also got involved in theatre and it was during his performance in a play in London that he was spotted by Kevin Spacey
and invited to join the ca-st of the film “Ordinary Decent Criminal” (2000).
His first taste of success came in 2001, when he starred in Joel Schumacher’s film “Tigerland”, where he played the role of a red-neck Texan soldier, who is set to boot-camp in preparation for combat in Vietnam.
He won the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for “Best Actor” for his performance in this film.
Farrell went on to star in the film “American Outlaws” (2001), a “Jesse James”, who leads the fight of a town to regain the property taken from them by a railroad baron. 2002 was a busy year for Farrell.
He starred in the thriller “Phone Booth” as well as starring alongside Bruce Willis in “Hart’s War” and Tom Cruise in Steven Spielberg
’s “Minority Report”.
In 2003 Farrell starred in the film “Daredevil” alongside Ben Affleck and “S.W.A.T”, alongside Samuel L. Jackson
and LL Cool J.
His big break came in 2004, when he starred opposite Angelina Jolie
as the world conquering “Alexander the Great” in Oliver Stone
’s biographical film, “Alexander”.
The film received mixed reviews, especially in the US, where Farrell won a Razzie Award for “Worst Actor”, for his performance.
2005 brought mixed fortunes for Farrell. He was re-united with Christopher Plummer (from “Alexander the Great” and starred alongside Christian Bale
in as “Captain Smith” in “The New World”, a film about the clashes between English settlers and Native Americans during the 17th century.
His character falls in love with Pocahontas, the daughter of a Native American chief. In December of the same year he was treated for exhaustion and dependency on prescription medication.
Following his recovery, in 2006 he starred alongside Jamie Foxx in the cinema adaption of the TV series “Miami Vice”.
A tanned Farrell looked irresistible in a pair of “Aviators”! In 2007 Farrell starred alongside Ewan McGregor
in Woody Allen’s film “Cassandra’s Dream”.
They play two brothers who are struck by financial difficulties, which in time reduce them to enemies.
In 2008 Farrell appeared in the film “In Bruges”, where he played a hitman whose assignment goes wrong and he if forced to go into hiding in Bruges. His performance in the film earned him a Golden Globe Award for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Muscial”.
The following year Farrell appeared in the film “The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus”.
Heath Ledger had originally been cast for the role, but after his death it was Farrell who replaced him. Farrell donated his salary for the film to Heath Ledger’s daughter, who had been left nothing in her father’s Will.
In 2011 Farrell starred alongside Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Anniston, as a horrible boss in the film “Horrible Bosses”.
Not only do we see Farrell in a totally different light, we see both his serious and comical side. In the same year he played the role of a vampire in the film “Fright Night”.
In his private life, Farrell is a father to children. His first child was born in 2003 during his relationship with US model Kim Bordenave.
Their son has Angelman Syndrome (characterized with frequent smiling and hand-flapping).
Farrell is a great advocate in raising awareness of this Angelman Syndrome and in 2007 was an official spokesman for the Special Olympic Games in China.
His second son was born in October 2009, whilst he was in a relationship with Alicja Bachleda- Curus. The couple are no longer together.
Farrell was also rumoured to have had a fling with Britney Spears
in 2003 and in the same year made a sex tape with his Playboy model girlfriend, Nicole Narain.
He filed a lawsuit against the release of the tape, which he settled out of court with Narain.
It is rumoured that Farrell is currently single. With his rugged looks and Irish accents, ladies, need we say more?
