Pam Palmater and YWCA Award

With the next generation looming and the clock ticking more loudly, she has not slowed down in getting the message out. Palmater has recently launched a new women’s speaker series which features Indigenous women that are leaders and role models in their communities.

She was aware that the discussions always tended to lean towards males as experts and leaders and realized that there were a large number of accomplished women activists, role models and leaders that could add something to the conversation from a different perspective.

“I wanted a mix of people so people could see that leadership comes in all different forms and sizes,” she says. The series has brought in women who are chiefs, producers in media and who are lead negotiators and activists.

Palmater will be accepting her award from the YWCA in May and she is excited about this honor for many different reasons, one being that the YWCA will not only be raising more awareness of the work that still needs to be done, but also that they will be recognizing the accomplishments in the Indigenous community.

“The assumption is we will get all our awards from the Aboriginal Achievement Awards, the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, that we will be recognized by our own,” she says, “so it perpetuates society not seeing all the great stuff that we do because we’re not just poor, we’re also doing amazing things with the little we have and people need to see that. So by the YWCA recognizing an Indigenous person, it means that the YWCA is recognizing everybody in society, not just one group.”
