From 2am starts, diva strops and mud-soaked shoots in Wales – to exclusive Oscar parties, and schmoozing with bands backstage at festivals: for TV Producer Kate Amarnani, life swings from uber glam to hard slog grunge.
Raised between London and Surrey, Kate studied her A Levels before going to film college at Ravensbourne. But rather than head to university she wanted to start working towards the career of her dreams.
“I wanted to get into the working world,” explains Kate. “So I deferred [uni] for a year and went straight in to be a Runner on Blind Date at 18. I never went back!”
Kate’s determination landed her first proper job on cult morning show the Big Breakfast in 1997.

“I bombarded the [Big Breakfast] Production Manager with phone calls until she finally gave in! I was a runner for six months, then was asked to be the Celebrity Liason, meeting and greeting celebs on the show, and literally run around after their every need.”

From Diva strops to hangovers from hell, dealing with celebs every day can be far from glam.
Kate remembers “Once when Mariah Carey was in the studio, she was like ‘hand.’ I didn’t know what she wanted so was like ‘sorry’? ‘Give me your hand’ – then she spat chewing gum into my palm.”
As well as babysitting guests, she often had to help presenters, like Gail Porter and Donna Air, and producers with random requests.
“I had to cut up all the presenter’s queue cards, stick them various places so they could read their lines, and once a producer threw me bucket and said ‘the swimming pool looks too full on camera – lower it by an inch.’ I was dumbstruck!”
