Dried out hair

Most people slather on the sun cream during a trip abroad, without giving a thought to the hair on their heads - so unless you dig the dried out frazzled look, remember to protect your locks as well as your skin from the damaging effects of the sun.

UV rays break down the melanin in the hair and cause it to oxidize, lightening its colour as well as weakening its defence against free radicals.

Keratin, a vital protein found in the hair is also broken down on exposure to UV rays, and when this protective layer is damaged, the hair shaft underneath becomes immediately more vulnerable. As a result, your hair will gradually weaken and become drier over time - think Worzel Gummidge!

To counteract this, opt for an intense conditioner containing nourishing ingredients such as aloe vera, avocado oil and essential proteins. Avoid products containing a form of silicone called dimethicone; this can make your hair appear glossier immediately after using it, but dry it out even more in the long run.
