High-Top Trainers

This season the classic high-top trainer is a wardrobe staple. MARIAN BUCKLEY selects some of the best styles.

The high-top is a trainer design that will serves you well this season - despite the fluctuations of fashion a good quality pair of high-top trainers will work well in most men's wardrobes. The trick is choosing the pair or pairs that work for you and from designer versions to definitive labels, there are some seriously stylish designs available.

Hummel was originally a German brand when it was established in 1923 but became Danish-owned in 1975. Its chairman, Christian Stadil has developed a following for his approach to spiritual corporatism: he delivers lectures and has even published a book called 'Company Karma' with Professor Steen Hildebrandt. Hummel has strong associations with football and its signature chevron stripes have been donned by Real Madrid and the Danish national team. For the past few years, Hummel sportswear has been quietly establishing itself here in the UK and, with a series of designs for S**** aka Swear London, is set to garner more fans. Styles include black Iggy 12 trainers with a patent trim, suede heel and toe inserts and the High 03 with gray panels, brogue details and black and red chevron stripes.

There are some very credible high-tops by designers as well: the god-like Raf Simons offers understated white leather high-tops with velcro fastenings, McQueen continues his collaboration with Puma and has introduced subtle gold/brown striped details, while although not seen as an established trainer brand, Lanvin has fused leather, satin and suede to create a luxurious look.

Fans of Martin Margiela know that Maison Margiela always delivers style with attention to detail and these lairy blue high-tops are no exception - stand out shoes which don't scream sport. Traditional trainer brands are a safe bet for original, timeless styles. PF Flyers is an American label with over 70 years of history and is built on the principle of Posture Foundation, an innovation in canvas shoes with a patented insole to provide extra comfort in sports shoes. The distinctive look of PF Flyers have a 'love them or hate them' Marmite effect but these textured leather trainers are substantially different from the main collection.

Of course, if we could only ever have one king of high-tops in the whole world, Converse would undoubtedly wear the crown. This pair in black leather are a great winter alternative to canvas.
