Getting serious

After a year, it might be time to start thinking about where you're both headed.

You've had a while to figure out if you're a good match and if you want to commit to each other. While there's no need to rush, you need to put some thought into the future.

If he's still reluctant to talk long-term plans, you might be running into trouble.

"If it’s not happening, consider whether your partner just isn’t in a place to make solid plans yet," suggests Kate.

"Maybe he's still studying, or paying off debts, or climbing the career ladder. If he's not in a settled place where he can afford to make big changes — like move in with you or get married — don’t assume it’s going nowhere."

Give him the benefit of the doubt for a while, but if taking the next step in your relationship is important to you right now, it may be time to cut your losses.

Be considerate, but make it clear that you're not going to wait around forever while he figures out how — or if — you fit into his plans.
